Knight / Castle Themed Birthday Party

Shields:

What you need:
- foam board
- xacto knife
- different colors of construction paper
- scissors
- glue
- pencil

How to make it:
1. Draw the shape of your shield on the foam board.  If you don't feel artistically capable of hand drawing it yourself, don't panic.  Draw or trace a circle or print out a line drawing of a shield that you can use as a guide.
2. Once you have the outline drawn, cut out your shield using an xacto knife.
3. To create the background for your shield, trace your cut out onto the color of construction paper you would like to use.  This makes sure your shapes will line up.  You're now going to cut out the construction paper, leaving about a .5" margin

Now accent the shield with some construction paper.  You can use a number of patterns to do this, be creative!  Below are some tips for creating the accents:
- When making the background colors for your shield, trace the entire shield on the construction paper.  This makes sure you have the right shape.    Then, cut out the colors

Castle Cake

What you need:
- cake batter (2 boxes or home made - I'm just explaining how to assemble it not how to cook it ;-))
- 2 rectangular cake pans (one large and one small is ideal, but can also work with two the same size)
- cupcake pans
- frosting (chocolate and vanilla)
- food coloring

How to make it:

Prepare the cake mix.  Pour one large rectangular pan (13x9), one small rectangular pan (11x7), and at least 6 cupcakes (if you have enough to make extra, do it, just in case you mess up).

Allow to cool, remove the large came from the pan and frost it in the color desired.  Now, take the small pan and cut about a 1-2" square from the corners along one of the long sides.  Place this cake on top of the large cake so that the long side that you did not cut lines up with the long side of the first cake.  Frost this cake and grab your cup cakes.  Place 1 cup cake on each of the corners of the small cake (see the photo above).  Place one cupcake on the front of the cake to act as the door, cut another cupcake in half and place it above the door to act as an arch.  Now frost these.

To give it some finishing touches, you can add lines and accents such as windows in a darker color of frosting.  You can also make flags from toothpicks and stick these in each of the cupcakes on the top of the cake.
