I really enjoyed the one hour painting challenge that I did last week, so I decided to try my hand at a one hour drawing challenge.
The reference photo for this one again came from Ainslie Gilles-Patel via the Equine Reference Source Facebook group. If you like horses even a little I recommend liking her Facebook page, she's an incredibly talented photographer and artist.

I broke out the black paper again and a white gel ink pen that I had bought specifically with this type of drawing in mind. I didn't take any in progress shots of this drawing though, so I guess I'll just have to explain the process (more boring, I know).
I very lightly sketched out the form of the horse in a white pencil then went right in with the pen, adding highlights in white ink. The gel ink was harder than I anticipated to work with, as there wasn't really a way to add mid-tones. I used smaller lines going in the directions of the horse's coat to try to establish the grays.
All in all I was pretty happy with the result - and I kept it within an hour this time - but I think I'll save those pens for crafts and do some more pastel/pencil drawings on the black paper in the future.
