This photo seems be very popular on Pinterest at the moment, and I saw someone ask for help reading the diagram for how to make the shawl.
I couldn't help but notice that there actually seemed to be multiple shawl patterns in this image. Notice how the upper left has the pineapple points facing up? And the one on the top right has pineapples with points facing down? It also has both large and small pineapples. And the diagram at the bottom seems to be showing the top edge of a shawl, meaning again those points would be facing down (so it's actually not even in the picture). Confusing!
I followed the Pinterest link, and visited the source of the images. I recommend checking it out if you are interested in any of these shawls:
On that site there is a copy of what I believe to be the pattern for both of these shawls. I've included a copy of that photo here.
The diagram in the top right is the pink shawl, the diagram in the bottom left is the white shawl/poncho.
Below, I've done my best to translate these shawls into written patterns, but I am by no means an expert and I have not actually worked these shawls myself yet. Please patient with any errors or omissions. If you find that part of the pattern needs to be revised, please leave a comment and I will make the corrections.
Pink Pineapple Shawl
Notes before you start:
- Pattern is worked from the bottom (center point of your shawl) up
- Each row is going to start and and with a shell (dc2, ch2, dc2)
- Rows 1-6 form the base of the first pineapple, rows 7-10 form increases for the next set of pineapples, Rows 11-13 close the first pineapple and start the base of the next 2 pineapples.
Abbreviations:

- Ch3 & join to form a ring
- Ch 3, dc into the ring, ch2, dc 4 into the ring, ch2, dc 2 into the ring
- Ch3, dc into the ch2 space, ch2, dc 2 into the same ch 2 space (this makes your shell, from now on, this will be called "beg shell"). Ch3, skip 2dc, dc into the space, ch3, dc into the same space, ch 3, skip the next to dc. Dc2 into the ch2 space, ch2, dc2 in the same space (from now on this will be called "shell").
- Beg shell, ch3, skip the 1st ch 3 space, tc 9 into the next ch 3 space, ch 3, skip the next ch 3 space, shell.
- Beg shell, ch3, skip the 1st ch 3 space, dc in the first tc, (ch1, dc1) in the next 8 dc [for a total of 9dc with 1ch space between each dc], ch 3, skip the next ch 3 space, shell.
- Beg shell, ch3, skip the 1st ch3 space, sc in the next ch1 space, (ch3, sc1) in all of the next ch1 spaces [total 8sc with 3ch between each], ch 3, skip the next ch3 space, shell.
- Ch3, dc into the ch2 space, ch2, shell [this creates an increase for the start of the next pineapple], ch3, skip the first ch3 space. Sc in the next ch3 space, (ch3, sc1) in all of the next ch 3 spaces [total 7 sc with 6 groups of ch3 space in between]. Ch 3, skip the next ch3 space, shell, ch2, dc2 [again, creating an increase].
- Beg shell in the first ch2 space, shell in the next ch2 space, ch3, skip the first ch3 space. Sc in the next ch3 space, (ch3, sc1) in all of the next ch 3 spaces [total 6 sc with 5 groups of ch3 space in between]. Ch 3, skip the next ch3 space, shell in the first ch2 space, shell again in the next ch 2 space.
- Beg shell in the first ch2 space, ch1, dc1 in the space between the two shells in the previous row, ch1, shell in the next ch2 space. Ch3, skip the first ch3 space. Sc in the next ch3 space, (ch3, sc1) in all of the next ch 3 spaces [total 5 sc with 4 groups of ch3 space in between]. Ch 3, skip the next ch3 space. Shell in the first ch2 space, ch1, dc1 in the space between the 2 shells from the previous row, ch1, shell in the next ch 2 space.
- Beg shell, ch3 [I think? diagram does not indicate the number], dc in the ch1 space, ch3, dc in the next ch1 sp, ch3, shell in the next ch2 space. Ch3, skip the first ch3 space. Sc in the next ch3 space, (ch3, sc1) in all of the next ch 3 spaces [total 4 sc with 3 groups of ch3 space in between]. Ch 3, skip the next ch3 space. Shell in the first ch2 space, ch3, dc1 in the ch1 space, ch3, dc1 in the next ch1 space, ch3, shell in the last ch2 space.
- Beg shell, ch3 skipping first ch3 space, (dc1, ch3, dc1) in the next ch 3 space [forms the base of a new pineapple], skip the next ch3 sp & shell in next ch2 space. Ch3, skip the first ch3 space. Sc in the next ch3 space, (ch3, sc1) in all of the next ch 3 spaces [total 3 sc with 2 groups of ch3 space in between]. Ch 3, skip the next ch3 space. Shell in the 1st ch2 space, skip the 1st ch3 space, (dc1, ch3, dc1) in the next ch3 space, skip the next ch3 space, shell in the ch2 space.
- Beg shell, ch3, tc9 in the ch3 space, ch3, shell in the ch2 space. Ch3 skipping the ch3 space, sc, ch3, sc [top of your pineapple], ch3, skip ch3 space. Shell in the ch2 space, ch3, 9tc in the ch3 space, ch3, shell in the last ch2 space.
- Beg shell, ch3, skip ch3 space, dc, (ch1, dc1) in each remaining tc, ch3, skip ch3 space, shell in ch 2 space. Ch5, skip 1st ch3 space, sc1 in the next ch3 space, ch5 skipping last ch3 sp [ends your first pineapple]. Shell in the ch2 space, ch3, skip ch3 space, dc, (ch1, dc1) in each remaining tc, ch3, skip ch3 space, shell in ch 2 space.
- Ch3, dc into the ch2 space, ch2, shell in same ch2 space [creates an increase], ch3, skip the first ch3 space. Sc in the next ch1 space, (ch3, sc1) in all of the next ch1 spaces [total 8sc with 3ch between each]. Ch 3, skip the next ch3 space, shell in the ch2 space. [NOTE: I think there should be a ch3 here, but the diagram does not indicate anything between these two shells]. Shell in the next ch 2 space, ch3, skip the first ch3 space. Sc in the next ch1 space, (ch3, sc1) in all of the next ch1 spaces [total 8sc with 3ch between each]. Ch 3, skip the next ch3 space, shell in the ch2 space, ch2, dc2 in the same space.
- beg shell in 1st ch2sp, shell in next ch2sp, ch3 skipping ch3sp, work (sc1, ch3) across the ch3sp [as you did on the previous pineapple]. Ch3 skipping ch3 sp, shell in ch2 sp, ch2 [skip ch3 if you made it per my note above], shell in ch2 sp, ch3 skipping 1st ch3sp, work (sc1, ch3) to form the pineapple. Ch3, skip ch3 sp, shell 1 in each of the next ch2 sp.
From here the pattern more or less repeats itself. Pineapples are formed with the same tc9, dc ch1, sc ch 3 pattern until you reach the tops. The shawl's outside border is formed by shells that increase when you start the (sc1, ch3) part of your pineapples. Those increases are worked the same as the start & end of rows 7-11.
